Carbon County's Court Computer System is a
state-of-the-art case information and case management system. It has been in
operation since 1984 and is continuously refined and upgraded. Major
applications include Criminal, Civil, Juvenile, Domestic Relations Case
Processing; Jury Selection and Management; Court Collections; and Court
Scheduling.
The Court Computer Information Systems staff
assures that the computer systems remain up and running twenty four hours a day
with full technical support.
The Court Computer Systems Director is
responsible for computer/network operations and management, technical services,
design and implementation of automated data processing systems, and design and
maintenance of the Court's Web page.
The Court Computer System operates on a Dell
PowerEdge server which functions as a dedicated file server for a UNIX
operating system. All Court and Court related offices are networked through
this system. This unique and fully integrated system allows all Court and Court
Related offices to share ONE DATABASE for the input and dissemination of
information. All information becomes immediately available on-line after it is
placed in the database by any Judge or Court department.
Additionally, both Judges and their staffs are
networked through a LAN network system. This network is PC based running
primarily in a Windows NT environment and uses Microsoft Word 2000 for word
processing and MS Excel 2000 for statistical and budgetary purposes. Several
departments also have Internet access. E-Mail is available for all network
users.
High speed Internet Access to Westlaw.com allows
the Judges, Law Clerks and Court Administration to research Pennsylvania
materials such as Statutes, Appellate Court Cases, Rules of Procedure.
Recently, two computers were added to the Law
Library in order to provide electronic legal research materials to the
attorneys and to the public. These computers provide access to all legal
materials that used to be provided in book format.
REMOTE PUBLIC ACCESS is undoubtedly one of the
most popular features of our Court Computer System. Civil and criminal filings,
attorneys and court scheduling, and court opinions are accessible free of
charge to the public through the use of modems. Public Access is available
twenty four hours a day, seven days a week.
The Court's web page was created in 1999. The web
page was created to provide Carbon County citizens with access to Court
information. The Computer Department eventually plans to give the community
access to all public records through the website.
In 2001, the Court Computer
Information Systems Department received approximately 1101 phone calls
requiring computer related services. A new position of Computer Assistant was
added in order to keep up with technological growth in the Court System.
